Wynn Completely Re-designs Website

Last edit: NYCnVegas on Thursday, 2nd February 2012 4:50 am
Last response by RateVegas 4th February 10:26pm

The Wynn Website has been completely redone. I checked it for rates yesterday (Feb 1st) and by 7:00 Am New York time on Feb 2nd it was 100% different.

Much more narration from Steve and even a cameo. It really slowed my internet down though...more so than previously.

As an addendum - the WynnResorts.com corporate site was also re-done in black replacing the Wynn Brown. Is Black the new Brown at Wynn?

JohnD responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Clearly the site has been adjusted for the elderly among us who cannot see anything if it's not bold and in oversized font. Ew.

MinVegas replied on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

I don't think the enormous fonts are for the elderly among us, so much as they are for the "slowly losing our eyesight and thus can't read the smaller fonts" among us.

If you imagine that Steve, with his degenerative vision, was hands-on with the creation and approval of this page you can easily conclude why they decided to go for 30pt font.

JohnD replied on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Glad you got the joke, Frodo.

creamsissle responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Alright, fess up. Who in the design department chose the jitterbug template? I find the new design to be hideous. The old website, while clunky and awkward, was at least classy and attractive. The new site seems as if they're giving all users the mobile browser experience.

responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Holy 24-point font. And the "Make your selection on the left" instructions. Wow. My eyes hurt. Pretty pictures though.

NeverJustJ replied on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Pictures are great...boardering on being "over fixed" in PhotoShop, but quite nice!

 blackjacker1979 replied on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Searching within the site links you to Alta Vista.

Attica replied on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

You are the [00023] visitor to the website!

parchedearth responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Maybe I missed it, but where is Okada listed?

I'll be surprised if this design lasts more than week. I see what they were trying to do, but it just looks childish. It lacks any elegance or charm that the casino is designed around. Almost stoops to the level of a Caesars site. I guess Winn Spiegel strikes again.

 CBB48Vegas responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

the homepage's picture, everybody can see Steve Wynn's balls.

 etm117 responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Seriously, this has to be an early April Fool's joke or something right?

dsmaier responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

This MUST be some sort of joke...I think.

RateVegas responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

I cannot believe how bad this is. How did this ever happen?

Did Steve complain about not being able to read the site and demanded the simplest, lowest common denominator site?

Not only is it ugly and devoid of design, they removed a bunch of info like restaurant menus. The restaurant detail pages look like PowerPoint slides - just a few bullet points on a black background.

Unbelievably bad.

alexanbo responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Wow anyone find some scrolling text?

WebCodeMonkey responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Did April fools come early this year? Seriously, what in the actual fuck is going on at WLV?

vegasflunkie responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Unbelievably bad. Is this a Geocities web site? Yuck.

NeverJustJ replied on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Ahh GeoCities...I kind of enjoy it when I stumble across one of them these days. Also great are sites like this: http://www.snowcrest.net/dlharter/OliveFestival/

When was the last time you heard such groovy midi music?!?

WebCodeMonkey replied on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Ah the days of the animated under construction gifs...

MinVegas responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

The amount of babble Steve gets and some of his usual confusion about computers creeping into his intros ("buttons on the right side of our web site page") suggests that he has at least a shred of responsibility for this.

Given his prior awareness of technology ("information section on your internet"), I wouldn't be surprised if this was basically forced on marketing/IT by executive order. Nobody who does this stuff for a living should think it's a good idea to hide your reservations link behind a splash page. Even if you DO want to do the "this site best viewed at #x# resolution and with sound on" gateway screen, you put the little RESERVE: ROOMS | SHOWS thing at the top of the screen for a very important reason. People aren't going to click around all day if they have money and want to give it to you.

The old web site had a no-bullshit reservations pop-up link at the top right corner of the screen at all times. MGM sties practically throw a reservations calendar in the right column of their splash pages. I like the big lush photos, but this structure and the beveled buttons is like something I'd expect to see from an indie self-funded joint downtown like the Golden Gate.

It takes four clicks to reach a point where you can order show tickets. Horrible.

Malibugolfer responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Oh my. That's really, really tacky. I'd get a new web designer if it were my company and this is for a multi-billion worldwide entity?
Could it have anything to do with SW's vision? Seriously. That can be the only explanation.
And Okada is closing for a few months for renovations, that's my guess why it's not there.

 Dave702 responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Wow. It's got to be a joke. This just looks so much worse than anything else out there...why?

RateVegas replied on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

We've seen Weaver's influence on PR and marketing stuff and now the Web site. If this is the result, I'd humbly suggest he's not the right guy to be making these kinds of decisions.

JakeZ responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

What a shitshow. It's got to be a joke, or some kind of a placeholder. I hope.....

HillBilly responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

The only possible explanation is they've been hacked. If I were Sheldon, I would be sitting in my office laughing hysterically at this. Like Terry Benedict in Oceans 13 as he watches the chaos on his TV going down at The Bank.

vegasdropout responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Wow. Absolutely stunned. After laughing myself off my chair, this actually brings up a several thoughts.

Have the team at Wynn never heard of A/B testing?

If they have, does no one have the guts to stand up to Mr.Wynn and do some A/B testing first before launching such a drastic change?

It seems they hired a 10 year old to do the design and an 11 year old to build it. I wonder how much they paid for this. It's probably just another shop in it for a quick buck because any decent designer/developer would have balked at putting their name to something so gaudy and outlandishly ugly.

The new site seems to be a major step back in terms of SEO. They've shot themselves in the foot by not redirecting the previous link structure. If you search on google for anything on the wynnlasvegas.com domain, it's all 403s. for example: http://www.wynnlasvegas.com/restaurants/Casual-Dining/. Wow. Amateurs.

All black booking engine? I'd love to be a fly on the wall in the next meeting they discuss the conversion funnel. (Or rather their lack of a conversion funnel).

Navigation conventions are...inconsistent to the point of being non-existent.

...and bullet points in buttons? Really? Seriously? Applause. Well done.

MinVegas replied on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

"does no one have the guts to stand up to Mr.Wynn"

Pretty much. He's a heavily involved CEO/Chairman with as near enough to be unimpeachable voice in how things go, and that kind of thing can result in Michael Eisner sized mistakes as easily as it can Steve Jobs sized successes.

vegasdropout responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Oh wait, someone tell the wlv team they forgot to screw with their twitter page. It looks too elegant right now. Needs to be in goth.

NYCnVegas responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Another observation - there's no information on the casino or anything about gaming.....

About it being a joke - who ever did it also re-did the corporate site but left the Wynn Macau site completely alone.

parchedearth responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Could this have been intended as just a mobile site for viewing on cellphones?

Can't believe there is no mention of the casino.

RateVegas responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

On the call, Steve Wynn just called the new Web site 'our best effort' and 'ultra user-friendly'. They are 'very proud of it'.

There's really nothing else to say. They have lost their minds.

JakeZ replied on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

You're right. I'm at a loss for words.

Time for me to start thinking about wanting to work somewhere else once I finish college....

responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

You can't pause the resort tours...the Wynn tour lasted over ten minutes. This is madness. I sent this to the web designers at my place of employment, and they thought it was a joke. We're considering sending it to the big boss, but we don't know what we'd do if he liked it.

 blackjacker1979 responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Anyone else see a format comparison to Harrah's/CET websites?

Just saying.

NYCnVegas replied on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

thinking Marilyn Spiegel (nee Winn)?

Drake responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Probably got created at some Macau sweatshop where the web designers live in a dormitory and get paid $10 a day plus food.

Gotta say, listening to Steve talk about the nightclubs is like listening to your 80-year-old grandfather trying to sound cool talking to another 80-year-old.

 wpsteel66 responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Totally agree that this new design is unappealing and not to Wynn's standards.

Not only no mention of the casino (as already pointed out), but the property map is removed also.

EricL responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

This is by far one of the worst websites I have ever seen. I really hope it is some sort of placeholder. Equally laughable is a comment on Wynn's Facebook page - apparently somebody (who is a Web Design teacher) loves it and wants to share it with her students. What a mess.

ChiCell responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Wow this site is pretty bad... the only thing I like is I can watch the in room property tour at home which makes me feel like I am in a room at Wynncore.

Romaman responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Wow. I guess the site is so bad, even the Wynn fanboys aren't posting anything because there's absolutely nothing positive to say about it.

 bklyn2la responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Ok jokes over, switch it back now. I never really liked the old site, but this looks utterly ridiculous. Very cheap looking which Wynn is anything but.I'm not loving some of the other recent Wynn changes which seemed to coincide with the departure of Andrew Pascal and hate the idea of another club opening up in the former Alex area.

HillBilly responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

Look at the bright side, this will provide for extremely entertaining discussions on FiveHundy and the VegasGang podcast.

RateVegas replied on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

You'd better believe it.

"I don't always design websites for Wynn Resorts, but when I do....I use FrontPage" - The Worst Web Designer in the World

HedgedBettor responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

I utterly despised the old Wynn website, it was so overwrought and useless as to defy imagination - but this is worse. Straight out of 1999, its an embarrassment to a proud casino.

bigdaddyj responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

I think this is the icing on the cake that finally vindicates everything I've been saying about Wynn lately...absolutely horrible. Disturbing, actually. Not only does it look cheap, but they've completely robbed it of so much detail, too. Seriously, it's on par with, if not even worse than, the "LVH" website.

If Wynn were a TV show, it would now have officially jumped the shark.

Halton responded on Thursday, 2nd February 2012

I didn't think it would be possible to beat mlife.com for worst website in the trippies. Despite the fact mlife.com is even worse this year than last year, Wynn's shows strong potential to dethrone the mlife.com for worst website.

 brt374 responded on Friday, 3rd February 2012

I'm almost legally blind and this hurt my eyes. The fact that the bright red "Book a Room" button is on the very bottom (and I had to scroll down to even see it) is a nightmare. Someone should archive this before they yank it down!

adztheman responded on Friday, 3rd February 2012

Fascinating..they have a lot of video..which is fine I guess..but it looks straight out of 1999...very LVH..they've left their iPhone app alone for now, which actually is a little easier to navigate..

MikeE responded on Friday, 3rd February 2012

Steve has made it clear in the past that he's a total, clueless curmudgeon when it comes to the internets. The fact that he was so excited about the new website during the most recent quarterly conference call is indicative that he had a direct say in its design.

Stick with resorts, Steve.

Blakjackkid responded on Friday, 3rd February 2012

This is something Trump would do! LOL

 detroit1051 responded on Friday, 3rd February 2012

Wonder when The Steve did the video tour narration? He went on about both Okada and Tableau.

The videos are both the in-room vids and are at least 12 months old.
