Hotel Themes

Started by coybotjr on Friday, 8th March 2013 2:21 pm

Now that we got a look at the first renderings of Resort World and to many people's (I believe) delight, it has a nice looking Asian theme. With the hope there will be a couple more resorts build on the strip someday, what kind of theme's would people like to see? Or remodels of current to fit their theme better.
I know I saw renderings once for a London theme that looked nice.
I think MGM could do a remodel of Lux, Ex, and CC. Keep the theme, but just update the feel.
I personally would love to see a futuristic sci-fi type resort (thought I know that would never happen)

How about a Western/cowboy theme? I feel like there's a market that comes to town every first week of December that would feel right at home there. There's also lots of establishments (Gilley's, PBR Rok bar, etc) that fit the theme. Maybe Ruffin should attempt making this at TI?

There have been Western-themed properties on The Strip in the past and if we do see a resumption of themed properties, a Western-themed one would be logical considering the history of the region as well as prior resorts with a Western theme. Perhaps MGM Resorts ought to consider such a plan for their land adjacent to Circus Circus and have a Western-themed property that caters to a similar crowd as Circus Circus. Gunfight shows on the main street of a replica Western town, can-can girls in an Old West saloon/theater. There are plenty of Western-themed amusement parks or themed areas in amusement parks from which to draw inspiration from (as well as previous Western-themed hotels in Vegas.).

Watch Westworld (1973) starring Yul Brynner and you might reconsider your desire for a western/cowboy themed casino.

I hope the themes do make a comeback. I'm not a big fan of the dull, trendy, luxuary places who care more about bottle service in a club I'll never go to than their casino or rooms. The theme places are dopey fun. I'd like to see a London themed one. A lot could be done with that showing different eras like 60's swinging or 70's punk rock. Somebody should turn the Stratosphere back into Vegas World too.

Looking over some of the "dreams" on VegasTodayAndTomorrow, the most recent spate of cancelled properties in Las Vegas were pretty much all designs of a similar ilk to what Cosmo and Aria are. One such example was Las Rambles Las Vegas, which was designed by the same architecture firm that designed Cosmo, and there are some similarities in the designs.

Renderings of the canceled Las Ramblas resort

I've wondered how things would have been had Steve Wynn's original Beau Rivage design had been built instead of the Bellagio. You wouldn't have had the iconic fountain show, but instead would have had a giant lake with an island in the middle with the resort (connected to "land" via a bridge).

Blech. Las Ramblas looks like something a recent art-school grad threw together for the next Sim City. I think if the glass-n-concrete fans were that numerous, Cosmo would be the hottest spot in town.

I'll agree with other posters. I'd love to see a Western theme, such as the casino in Bally's Atlantic City.

And I love the mountain lodge feel of the Ameristar Black Hawk (in Colorado), but that's a tough look to bring to a desert environment. The Red Rock has tried, though, and it's not bad.

An aqua or underwater hotel theme could be cool, too, if designers could keep drunk folks' various fluids from going everywhere.

Pair that with an aquarium like Mandalay's, a legitimate water park, dolphin shows/interactions, snorkeling and plenty of pools/lakes/rivers to make it a destination resort.

Keeping with the natural theme, there are no jungle- or safari-looking casinos in Vegas (Mirage comes closest).

Nor are there any operational Arabic-themed properties (RIP Aladdin and Sahara).

But the coolest resort theme? James Bond. Think of all the retail tie-ins, memorabilia displays, shooting ranges, paintball arenas, racetracks, stunt shows, nightclubs, cocktails and crazy sets that the 007 Casino would have.

The first time I drove by the under-construction Venetian with my friends, I remarked (having no idea what it was), "Look, there's the new Vatican-themed casino!" which got a few laughs. We then riffed on the concept:

- cocktail waitresses dressed like sexy nuns. Dealers in black clerical garb with white collar tabs, pit bosses wearing miters.
- when you win a hand at blackjack, the dealer puts the payout on your tongue.
- when someone hits a big jackpot, white smoke comes out of a chimney outside.
- Buffet called "Indulgences" with stations themed on the Stations of the Cross.
- highfalutin' night club called "Borgia"

And not that it's a bad idea, but isn't much of old downtown essentially Western-themed? I'm not sure that a new Strip property is going to want to echo Sam Boyd.

A Casino/Resort based on the Aztec empire would be sweet. Think Ceasars Palace but a tribute to a bygone empire a little closer to home.

Chuckmonster responded on Wednesday, 20th March 2013

I would love to see Caesars Palace transformed into a Pompeii themed resort. Of course this would require assistance from Mirage's volcano, to the tune of 250 degree blasts of heat, lava and mountains of ashen tephra raining down upon the new Pompeii Resort and Casino every 30 minutes from dusk until midnight. It most definitely would be a great place for Cirque to finally mount that Pink Floyd tribute show not to mention a proper BBQ joint.
