Vegas Internet Mafia Family Picnic 2014

First time since 2008 - What's new, pussycat?

Here's the deal. Starting overnight on Monday March 24, me and my momma are taking off on a road trip. We're driving from St Louis down to Los Angeles - on Thursday March 27 I'm going to be filming an episode of Wheel of Fortune. As soon as the taping is done, we're hopping on I-15 and heading to Vegas. I've been twice but not since 2008. My mother, however, has never been.

I got a free night at the Rio for Thursday the 27th and a free night at Luxor on the 28th (I'm probably gonna try the $20 trick for shits and giggles). We're gonna have all Thursday evening and all day Friday then heading for home starting Saturday morning. We're definitely hitting up the Neon Museum, Mob Museum, FSE and one or two other "touristy" things to give her a taste.

My question is: is there anything that's opened in the last few years that we absolutely HAVE to hit - keeping in mind we will have limited time?

Thanks for the help!

I hear there might be a snazzy new Walgreen's or CVS on the Strip.

Jokes aside, you'll probably want to visit the massive Ferris wheel at the Linq (near the Flamingo), though I don't think it's open to passengers yet. Also, have a fancy drink (or two) at the Cosmopolitan and wander through the former Imperial Palace (now the Quad) and the relocated O'Shea's.

Depending on your mom's tolerance for oddities, you might also want to consider viewing a show, including the mind-bending Rose.Rabbit.Lie (inside Cosmo), Absinthe (in front of Caesars), or the Michael Jackson Cirque du Soleil show at Mandalay.

They're certainly not new but I always encourage Vegas newbies to save some time for the Bellagio fountains and its indoor conservatory. Wynn and Mirage have similar shows and free attractions.

And, of course, your list of activities already is pretty solid, too. You'll find lots of stuff to explore near Freemont Street and elsewhere downtown. Have fun.

Well, Encore opened in late 2008, which, combined with Wynn, is probably the most beautiful hotel-casino complex on the Strip, so that has to be a must-see for your mother. Also would walk her around the City Center complex (opened in 2009), perhaps combining that with a walkaround of Bellagio and Caesars. IMO, showing a Vegas newbie all the different casinos is always cool, and since you have limited time, might as well concentrate on the best. You're staying at Luxor, so should be able to hit Mandalay pretty easy. And I think going downtown to check out the FSE and other stuff is cool. A dinner at the Triple George (next to the Downtown Grand and Mob Museum) might be a nice treat.
