Friendly poker room for beginner

Started by KosmoK on Sunday, 7th February 2010 2:49 pm

Since good blackjack has dried up on the strip, I figured I would give poker a try. I have played online, and watched some play so I am not a complete newbie, any recommendations for Poker rooms that are friendly to beginners? Preferable ones where I won't be the fish swimming amoung the sharks.

Tropicana was pretty noob-tastic when I played there 3 years ago.

I'd recommend playing limit Hold 'em to minimize your losses. All it takes is one big pot to make your day too! Play premium hands and you'll be a shark among many, many, many fish playing any two cards.

There's single table NL tournaments too at nearly every casino for $50-100 buy-ins.

I second this! 1-2 or 2-4 limit hold em at any of the low end/mid range properties are great for beginners. My personal favorite is Monte Carlo.

You're pretty much guaranteed to win with any face card pair or higher.

For a nice beginner room, hit Imperial Palace of Excalibur. Any small room should do.

You're best off on the Strip, plenty of beginners and dealers generally happy to help. I've always liked PH for friendly NLH tournaments at 10am, 2pm and 7pm (avoid the 2am - not so friendly)! - http://www.planethollywoodresort.com/gam_poker_sched.php - and there's the 9am $50 at Monte Carlo, and best of all for beginners is Mandalay Bay - if it's still going - as they have a low buy-in tournament that starts off limit then goes to NL; limited seats though (30 from memory). All these have fast-rising levels after the first hour which means one tourney ends before the next starts. If you want more chips and a structure that keeps you in your seat longer, try the midday $85 NLH tournament at Caesars - http://www.caesarspalace.com/casinos/caesars-palace/casino-gambling/poker-detail.html. Downtown - Nugget and Binions are tougher for the beginner - fewer beginners and plenty of grinders to compete with. Good luck, and hope to see you at one of the tables ;)

There are probably sharks at all of the strip casinos, but there are some soft rooms at Monte Carlo (nice setup as well), Treasure Island, and we've all wierdly done well at Mirage, despite the room's reputation for high-level play.
