I had always heard that the Carnival World Buffet was one of the best buffets to go to but hadnt felt the need to trek across the highway to go to the Rio. One trip some friends and I decided to make the move over there and I was pleased at how nice the buffet was. You can scan your rewards card at the door and after you decide where to start the food selection never ends. i thought I had covered all the stations and my friends came with food i hadnt seen so that tells you how big the place is. Its well worth the trip.

Carnival World used to be the best buffet in town. Then along came Bellagio, Aladdin, and Wynn, and all three completely stole Rio's thunder. Rio now has to settle for playing second fiddle to the gastronomic delights at the top-tier buffets. Still, Rio does a very good job with the Carnival World buffet. The main draw here is the vast quantity of offerings. The food just never seems to stop. Once you get from one end of the buffet to the other, you wonder if you should send up a signal flare to find your dining companions again. Dishes are all competently prepared, and nothing has a chance to sit around for very long. Be sure to keep an eye out for coupons, especially if you're staying at a Harrah's property.

In my opinion this buffet is surviving on it's previous reputation. At one point it was known as 'the buffet'. With cooking stations and a huge selection it was the class of town. Two things have brought it down in my opinion, the introduction of higher end buffets (Bellagio and Wynn) and the change in ownership that seems to continue to allow this buffet to fade into the shadows (along with the resort). I've never been as dissapointed in a dining experience in Vegas as I have been here. I went in with mild expectations, knowing that buffets can be subjective based on finding something you really like at it, and reviews tended to over fawn or complete dismiss the version I was going to. Service was horrible, beverages were not refilled and plates not removed in any kind of timely manner for a late lunch, with the restaurant being only mildly full. I chalk it up to a bad table waiter/busser, but it left an impression. The food in my opinion was awful, some of the offerings were average, but in viewing some of the sections, I swear there in front of me was some of the yellow and some of the blue from Vegas vacation. I think there are a lot of better values in Vegas on the buffet scene.

The Rio buffet is coasting some on its past reputation, I would say it's middle of the pack these days. There certainly is a lot of food to choose from, and locals get a discount during the week, used to be 50% now it's 25%. Highlights: the bananas foster sauce is really good on your morning oatmeal; drive-in style french fried onion rings over there in the fried seafood section, and sometimes the fried scallops are fresh and good. The clam chowder is good, as are the chili and cream soups. There is Mongolian BBQ if you like that kind of thing. One time I was there for breakfast and this guy at the next table said the strawberry filled churro was really good, and I looked across the table and Mr. Troutbend was snarfing one down, so I went and got one. Horrible. Lesson learned: use some judgment.
