History of MGM Grand
The MGM Grand and its 120,000,000 rooms make it the biggest hotel in the universe. Ok so its not that big, but it IS huge. The MGM Grand originally was located where Ballys is now, but shortly after the largest hotel fire ever killed tons of people, Kirk Kerkorian took the name and moved into a megaplex at the corner of Tropicana and Las Vegas Blvd. The new MGM Grand hosts top notch entertainment, sporting events, concerts and more. We feel a bit lost inside of the place though - it reminds us of a giant shopping mall with a casino in the food court. Some of our friends really like it though, its a little impersonal for us.
How are the rooms at MGM Grand?
The MGM Grand has the most rooms in all of Vegas - over 5K. They have so many towers in there, it is easy to get lost. Prepare yourself for a nice long walk to your room, unless you get lucky (or complain-ey) and score a room close to the elevators. Massive. Rooms are done up with B&W portraits of movie stars from the golden age. Oh, right! MGM started out as a movie studio long before getting into the gaming business. Ms. Blur got Judy Garland watching over her on her last visit there. $139 - $259.
What restaurants are at MGM Grand?
You won't starve should you be stranded there. MGM Grand has lured tons of celebrity chef's to come cook for you. Bam! See for yourself if it tastes as good as it looks on TV. They got Emeril, Wolfgang Puck, two Joel Robuchon joints, Michael Mina's Nob Hill and SeaBlue, Tom Colicchio's CraftSteak, sushi at Shibuya, There is the tried and true Rainforest Cafe, Stage Deli (get the pastrami!) 'wichcraft for sammitches, Cabana Grille and the MGM Grand Buffet. There are about 5 other restaurants we havent even mentioned - lots of options, food is great at MGM Grand (mostly).
Where is MGM Grand Located?
The MGM is down at the south end of The Strip. Another one of those casinos that take forever to get to from the street. You can cruise over to New York New York, Excalibur or the Luxor (using the nifty street bridges). Or simply hop on the monorail to visit Bally's (and neighbors) or the Hilton.
Exclusive Tips for MGM Grand:
As much as we dislike caged animals, we can't resist the Lion Habitat. When there are lion cubs, photo ops are available. One day we plan to try this to cop a feel. As far as concerts go, they book shows ranging from Hillary Duff to Phil Collins, with the occasional boxing match.
One word-HUGE. Big casino. Cool experience for us country folks from Tennessee. We're staying at The MGM in 12/07-look for the review!!!

Great room (the West Wing), home of my fave steak house - Craftsteak, but wow it is long walk anywhere, thankfully they have carefully put bars where ever you may get thirsty.

As far as I know, this is the only place that still has the old horse racing machine. This place may be the only building I've ever been in that is too big for me, and I've been in the Pentagon.

While my previous experiences at MGM haven't been anything to write home about, a recent stay at Skylofts, the boutique hotel occupying the top floor, proved to be out of this world. Don't think you'll splurge for one trip--you'll want to do it again the moment you're home. The only problem: downstairs it's the same old zoo that is MGM.

2nd best pool in Vegas. Decent slots. Can be a little overwhelming trying to get from one end of the hotel to the other. Crazy Horse Paris is a cool show!

It's a big green monster, but I love the art deco statues and other touches inside. Too bad it's taken a turn for the trendy in recent years, plopping a new sports book and waiters-dance-on-the-tables club in the middle of what used to be a tastefully-decorated gambling hall. Still, the newer East Wing suites are decked out in a retro 60s modern style that I warmed to after a while. If only they weren't a nautical mile from any entrance or exit.

I used to stay there when they had the kid's club. but they went so upscale and yet they have many gangs around. It's a pity. They have great food, an odd Cirque shows, and they have OK rooms. It's nothing special, but I've stayed there almost every time.

a little bit on the older side now. like if a beauty queen went from miss america to becoming a spokemodel at a textiles convention in peoria. rooms are showing their wear and tear. ridiculously long hallways. if money is no object get the skyloft. it's worth it. terrace suites aren't bad either, especially having an 800 sq ft balcony with a hot tub overlooking the strip. but when one is paying $1000 a night, one assumes that it would have updated elctronics. jus sayin'.
