I'd think that the space would be too small for the entire tulip construction, but I guess I haven't been in that area in a while.

you're right. the entire construction is pretty remarkable (i vividly remember the reflections of a rainy day in bilbao). i bet chuck can spin quite an analogy... buying a statement piece of modern art, and cutting it in half. a version (with stems) just sold at christie's for $33.6MM:

if you look at the reflection on the floor you can see the stems havent been broken. the tulip sculpture isnt that big (around 17 feet round), so it could possibly fit.
FYI; there are 5 tulip sculptures. i wonder if SW bought the one last november or if this is on loan from somewhere?

Im thinking it has something to do with the upcoming residence show Steve Wynn has been talking about putting on after Garth Brooks ended. He said its something "that's never been done before", so a headliner act would be unlikely...but maybe...
