Four packs go great with two things - wine coolers and rock n roll package tours. 1990's package Under The Sun Tour teams up chart toppers Sugar Ray, Uncle Kracker, Smash Mouth and jam wizards Blues Traveler for a show at the Golden Nugget on August 8th, presumably under the canopy of Fremont Street.

Other than Blues Traveler, I can't really speak for any of the bands on this bill.

Primarily known for their handful of hits off of the Four album in 1994, Blues Traveler were one of the pillars of the late-1980's East Coast jam rock scene, along side Vermont's Phish and a pair of amazing bands from Atlanta, Widespread Panic and the freakishly bizarre Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit.

Blues Traveler in those days were a barn burning blues boogie band, who owed equal debts to the Grateful Dead, Black Sabbath and Otis Redding. Lead singer John Popper was and still is a truly incredible harmonica player, able to peel the paint off of the roof of any venue then slide into a delicate whispering melody at a milliseconds notice. Watch Popper smoke legendary guitar virtuoso Steve Vai.

Here's "But Anyway" from 1995 at Shoreline:

And now the same tune 15 years later with a different bass player (RIP Bobby) and now a keyboardist.... bigger atmosphere, brighter tones, Popper still destroys it.

I've seen BT a dozen or so times back in the heady days of the early 90's, and I've never seen a bad show. Definitely recommend this if you're in town that weekend.

Comments & Discussion:

Agreed on Blues Traveler. They were very popular in my area in the 90s...seen them probably as many times as you. While I've never been that into their albums...they are a blast live. Popper consistently blows my mind. Don't really care for the other acts...but I'd go just to see them.

The concert will be in The Grand, not on the Fremont Street Experience.

Capacity will be around 1200.
