Endangered Species: Poker Dealers

As the World Series of Poker Main Event continues to roar at the Rio, word is coming out that a new 'all electronic' poker table will soon be replacing poker dealers and traditional chips at Las Vegas casinos very soon.

These new tables, developed by PokerTek, will replace dealers and traditional chips with electronic banking and cards that are displayed on a flat screen table embedded in the middle of the table. The move towards electronic poker tables is expected to speed up the game, increase the rake, eliminate dealer salary as well as the need for players to tip.

My first thought was... how are you going to protect your hole cards? Evidently you cup your hands around the screen as they come out.

While this seems odd at first, it really is no different than playing poker on the internet. There is no real need for a dealer, however technology isn't always honest... but then again neither are dealers.

PokerTek tables are currently in use at:
Ballys Tunica
Resorts Tunica
Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood and Tampa
Greektown Casino Detroit
Motor City Casino Detroit

Comments & Discussion:

i cant see them replacing all tables. Even automatic shufflers haven't been taking off as quick as the game has in the last few years. personally i can see many people getting upset when they accidentally have their cards shown because they do not know how to use the touch screen. Or what if you only have one hand?

When they replace the cocktail waitresses with robots, I'm moving back to Podunk.
