Step Aside Garth, Rancid's Coming to Wynn

Wynn Rancid

Tony Hawk's Stand Up For Skateparks charity event will be at Wynn Las Vegas this Saturday, and yes, there'll be a special performance by punk rockers Rancid. But it only gets weirder...

No details on the specific locations, but unless the grand ballrooms of Wynn or Encore have impossibly high ceilings, the chances of installing a half pipe in them are slim to none. This leaves us with no other option than to assume it'll be on the golf course.

Now, I'm not criticizing the event itself being for a good cause and all, but did Wynn make the right decision? No matter where on the golf course this takes place, you know it's going to disturb the VIPs in the Fairway Villas. After a five-figure loss at the baccarat tables, retiring to your private plunge pool won't be as peaceful as you had hoped. Then again, I'd imagine $2000 spent on the "Family Package" would be better spent on one of the upper units where you'll have your own balcony to enjoy the festivities. If any readers are around Wynn during this time, I'd be curious to hear how they worked everything out.

Here's my favorite quote about the whole thing:

Join Tony, fellow Benefit Committee members... Andrew Pascal, Elaine Wynn, Lorenzo Fertitta, Frank Fertitta III...

Casino mogul moshpit!

Comments & Discussion:

Couldn't they host it on top of one of the parking buildings?

So thats the theme?

I think CCS has the answer. The top floor of the Encore parking structure has no direct elevator access and is intended for staff use only. They could send the people who normally park there to the older employee garage on the other side of Sands Ave and ask them to haul ass over to Encore the hard way (aka "the way every customer coming in off the street has to.")

Is it conceivable Wynn would rent the empty New Frontier lot across the street? Or, he could block off a sidestreet or driveway. Encore parking garage is definitely another possibility. There is no way he messes up the golf course.

This reminds me, a bit, of the outrage in Las Vegas when the Grateful Dead first played the Sam Boyd Silver Bowl in the very early 1990's. Of course, Rancid is not the Dead, but one thing Vegas always seems to have trouble with is opening up and adapting to a new generation.

I heard that the half pipe is going to be built OVER the European pool at Wynn and that the band will be playing on the Sunset Terrace. Stage diving into the pool!

Chuck is right. @tonyhawk tweeted that they are covering the pool to install a ramp.
